Kabul, Afghanistan: In the wake of the tragic earthquake in Herat, which claimed the lives of over 2,400 individuals and injured more than 2,000, nations and global leaders have rallied together in an overwhelming show of support for Afghanistan.
Herat experienced a jolt with a magnitude of 6.3 on Saturday, followed by several aftershocks that further intensified the distress in the region.
The U.S. Secretary of State conveyed Washington’s concern over the calamity on social media platform X, reiterating that the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation. He further assured that “our humanitarian partners are on the ground, delivering urgent assistance to those affected.”
Qatar voiced its steadfast support for the Afghan people. In a statement, the Qatari foreign ministry accentuated its readiness to assist in the aftermath of the tragedy: “Qatar stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the victims of the earthquake and is committed to aiding in the recovery efforts.”
The sentiment was echoed by Saudi Arabia, as its foreign ministry shared profound sympathies and sorrow for all affected by the earthquake.
The immediate neighbors were also quick to step up. Pakistan’s NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) chairman, Inam Haider Malik, led a vital session involving the Pakistani ambassador in Afghanistan and other key representatives. They confirmed the dispatch of relief items encompassing food, medications, tents, and blankets. Additionally, Search and Rescue Teams are primed for deployment to assist in the disaster-stricken areas.
Lending their condolences, the UAE’s ministry of foreign affairs emphasized their unwavering support and unity with the Afghan populace during these challenging times.
At an international level, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, expressed his heartfelt condolences on social media. Taha pledged the OIC’s unyielding support for Afghanistan, standing in unity with its citizens.
In the face of adversity, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Afghanistan’s deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, extended gratitude and said the Islamic Emirate is open to aid and assistance from any country willing to help the victims.
